3 Simple Steps That Support Cat Health

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat health

If you care about doing everything you can to support cat health, then you will want to learn more about following these practical disease prevention tips that will be easy to incorporate in your daily routine and will provide many important health benefits to your cat.

First of all, let’s explore briefly what it is crucial to boost cat health. If you have a cat with a chronic disease or immune system disorder, then you know how it is to give your cat supplements, such as antioxidants which fight disease. While fighting disease is very important, it is also essential to prevent it. What you need is a plan that does both.

A plan to boost cat health is crucial because cats are exposed to the same toxic load that we are. In our environment, there are chemicals, pollutants and pesticides that we cannot escape. Food is grown in demineralized soil and it is not as nutrient-dense as it once was. Water is full of chemicals from city water plants. So we need to reduce this toxic load by attending to our health and do the same for our beloved animals. After all, they did nothing to create the conditions of the environment that they are forced to live in.

There are three simple things that you can do to support cat health:

1. Feed your cat organic food. This reduces the amount of pesticides and other chemicals that ingested through food. In addition to reading the label to make sure that there are no long chemical names that you can’t pronounce, also make sure that the food is made up mostly of lean protein and that is does not contain meat byproducts or cheap fillers. Always read the label, no matter what.

2. The body is about 70% water, so clean water is essential. Make sure your cat always has a big bowl of it but don’t give your cat water straight from the tap because city water plants pump it full of chemicals like chlorine and fluroide. Instead, invest in an inexpensive tap filter and use this to dispense clean water for you and your cat. That way, you don’t have to worry about buying bottled water which is expensive and fills up our landfills with plastic.

3. Give your cat a daily supplement. This supplement should contain natural antioxidants and herbs that are known to flush toxins from the body, cleanse the blood, liver and lymph and keep the vital organs strong and healthy. Important ingredients to look for are Astragalus, Cat’s Claw, Echinacea and Indian ginseng. By giving your pet an effective daily supplement to support cat health, you will help your cat to build immunity while fighting off disease.

As a caring pet owner, you know how important it is to be proactive and make the best health decisions for your pet. Following a plan to boost cat health will make it a natural part of your daily routine, reduce vet bills and most important, increase your chance for a long and happy life. All you have to do is feed your pet high quality food, provide clean, filtered water and administer a daily supplement.

Cat Behavior- Body Language

The Tail

A cat’s tail can act as a very good indicator of her moods and feelings. A happy, relaxed cat will hold her tail straight up; the higher the tail, generally speaking, the happier the cat. She will come to greet her owner or feline companion with her tail held high, often just bending over slightly at the tip.

A cat who is fearful or unsure will carry her tail half raised, and an unhappy cat will carry her tail low. A scared or angry cat may fluff her tail up to try to make herself appear larger and more threatening to adversaries. A cat’s tail will twitch when she is excited or playful, and some cats may twitch their tails out of sheer pleasure when being petted.

If a cat is swishing her tail from side to side in broad movements, this can signal annoyance. If she does this when you are playing with her, you may wish to stop or she could follow up with a physical attack. A cat will lash her tail rapidly back and forth if she is really agitated or angry, and an attack may certainly be imminent, so be aware!

If a female cat crouches down, making treading movements with her back legs and holding her tail to one side, she is making a sexual invitation and is likely to be on heat.

Ears

A cat will hold her ears upright and forwards when relaxed and happy, or greeting her owner or other companion. If they are very upright, she may be alert and listening to something she finds exciting or intriguing.

An unhappy cat, however, will hold her ears back, indicating nervousness and possibly impending aggression. Twitching ears can also indicate a cat who is unsure about the situation in which she has found herself. A cat who’s ears are flat back against her head is definitely feeling aggressive; it is thought that this posture offers the ears protection against attack or in a fight.

Eyes

If her eyes are wide open, she is alert and interested. A cat who half closes her eyes is feeling sleepy and relaxed. If she takes a long and slow blink, this means that she is feeling very relaxed and content; a cat will communicate affection for her owner or feline companion by looking into the eyes, averting the gaze and slowly blinking. If you do this to her, she is likely to reciprocate the gesture.

Other body language

A cat will arch her back and bristle her fur when feeling threatened or aggressive, to try to appear as large and intimidating as possible to enemies.

A cat who is feeling totally relaxed and at ease will roll over onto her back and expose her belly- this is her way of showing that she has complete trust in you, as she is potentially exposing herself to attack. Be aware though that cats do not like having their bellies rubbed- do this and you are likely to feel her claws!

Cats will often greet a feline friend or owner by touching noses, or rubbing their faces along cheeks or ankles. As well as being a sign of affection, they have scent glands in their cheeks, so this action marks you with their scent as a sign of ‘ownership’. You will probably see her marking items of furniture this way, to establish her ‘territory’.

Cats will also lick each other in a sign of mutual grooming and affection. A cat will often lick her owner to show her affection. If you take time to study your cat’s body language, you should get a much better understanding of how she is feeling.

Tips On Choosing A Rescue Cat

You should take the time to visit several shelters before you decide on the cat you want to bring home to your family. Your first visit should be to check out the centre itself. You want to adopt a cat from a place that is clean and ran in an efficient way. You can tell by just observing whether the place is well kept and if the staff seems to enjoy working with the animals.

Once you have decided which shelter you are going to use to adopt your new pet the next step is to find out about their adoption process. You will be able to find out what type of information is needed from you, such as information on existing pets in the home. You should ask about cost at this time so you know what to expect when you find the right cat or kitten.

The RSPCA and most welfare organisations will ask for a donation of a specific amount. This helps them to be able to provide care and any type of veterinary treatments needed, including vaccinations and neutering. The cost is usually minimal considering the prices of purchasing a cat from a breeder.

Adult cats are usually already littered trained and adapt will to a new home. They seem to be more laid back and affectionate. If you are considering a kitten just remember that they will need more time to become litter box trained and have to be fed more often. When they are real young they need constant supervision until they know what their limitations and boundaries are.

Make sure you talk to the people at the shelter and find out as much as you can about the cat or kitten that you are interested in. They should be able to tell you why or how the cat came to be at the rescue centre. You want to know as much as possible because some cats landed there due to people moving or having a baby. On the other hand some ended up in the shelter because of behavioral problems.

When you are choosing a cat or kitten make sure you pick one that is active and seeks affection from people. An adult cat should be comfortable with handling and petting without hissing or scratching. Kittens should be relaxed when picked up and handled and most of them will start purring. Ask the staff at the centre about anything they have observed about the cat’s personality and take that into consideration also.

When you are choosing the shelter cat that is best for your family make sure to look at them closely. A healthy cat or kitten has clear bright eyes and a shiny coat. They shouldn’t be real skinny or show any signs of illness such as a runny nose or diarrhea. Be on the look out to see if the cat is scratching constantly or if it is missing any hair around the ears or on the legs. This can be a sign of ear mites or fleas.

After you have made the decision on which cat or kitten that you want to adopt you will then arrange for the adoption to take place. This could take several days depending on whether a home inspection is involved. While you are waiting to pick up the newest member of your family you can make sure you have everything needed for your new cat or kitten. This would include a bed, food and plenty of toys.

Once you bring home your cat or kitten make sure you give them plenty of space and time to get use to their new surroundings. Cats adapt quickly and easily to new environments. In no time at your new cat will fit right in with the rest of your family.

Today, pet insurance is readily available and is like having health insurance on yourself; it is there when you need it for those unexpected large health-related bills. By having this kind of insurance you can ensure that your cat will get the best treatment if they are ever injured or seriously ill. They don’t have to be kittens to be eligible. Any cat no matter their age can be covered with pet insurance; as long as you keep the premiums up they will be covered for their lifetime.
